Lots of schools value w/l over academics.  ןɐɔ would hardly be the first school to fire their coach despite improved academics.  The difference is that a) academics were given as a reason his predecessor was fired and b) ןɐɔ went out of its way to tout academics.

As I said, revealed preferences.  My guess is that if the next guy delivers the wins, it won't matter if the apr slips.

The new coach has to deal with the slightly tougher GPA screen now.  It will be a touch tougher to get good players in, so doubt the new coach will worry about APR.  Easy enough to claim the new screen should address the APR.  If it is still low than UCB doesn't do enough to support the players has nothing to do with the academic ability of the kids.  Coach will focus on wins (a.k.a his only priority). 

Kelly could do so much better than UCB.  So, so much better.  There are plenty of Big 12 programs that would love him.  There are other Pac-12 programs with bigger budgets and better brands for recruiting.  Maybe Kelly couldn't find anything better, so who knows.  Kelly's voice is not good for TV or Radio, so he can't just sit in the booth for 12 months while waiting for a top tier college opening.

Recruiting has to fall apart if they don't get a coach in ~5 days, so have to believe UCB either fired for cause or has a very desirable coach coming in. 

If a very desirable coach, then I give that coach 23 months before going to a better gig.  Almost easier for the conference to recruit against a big brand name as that coach will be more valuable than whatever the UCB AD can afford.
