Colorado has a national championship in its recent past. The current athletes may not know much about it, but alums in their 40s and older certainly would recall that bit of tradition. So the right coach could tap into that championship legacy, raise funds, and have alums that remember the school wide effort it took to get to that level.
Colorado is pretty much THE top dog in most of the mountain states. UCB isn't even the top public football program in the state, and often loses recruits, even 3.0+ GPA types, to UW, UCLA, etc. etc.
I always thought McIntyre's ability to bring SJSU success was noteworthy. Therefore, I thought he was the better coaching option for any Pac-12 program. I guess, in the end, the fact that he is not at UCB proves he was/is a very good football coach.
