At this stage in January very few good jobs are available. So this consulting thing makes a lot of sense. Any OC or consulting gig is still going to leave UCB getting him up to his contractual salary. Serving at something at TCU gives him a reason to study the recruits, coaches and teams in Texas. That's why it is better than staying at home and collecting the paycheck. Really rather clever. Maybe a different force was/is responsible for UCB's football woes.
When the 2017 firings start happening he will be ready and able to just leave without needing to worry about staying for a bowl game or whatever.
I actually think Dykes will be the HC at an FBS program in 2018. A lot of middle Big12 and top conference USA programs will look at Dykes record at UCB and think that he did OK...for UCB. And that at a program with an administration that knows football will believe Dykes can pack the stands with fans that love (insert mascot here) raid style football and will win by landing recruits that love Texas or that greater ArkLaTex region.Â
