The wording in the SD Union-Tribune a
rticle, about a "scholarship offer" and Stanford offering "a free ride" is weird to me - don't walk-ons just have the opportunity for a free ride (and only after their junior year, IIRC)?

I know at least one former recruited walk-on whose family repeatedly referred to their financial aid as a scholarship.  Stanford is very generous.  Might be that.
