The James Lofton situation has always intrigued me.  I went to a barbecue in SoCal after Lofton's Sophmore year, I had never heard of him, but the receive coach at the barbecue told anyone who would listen that Lofton was going to be one of the greatest receivers ever.  He turned out to be just that, but not until he was a Senior.  What held him back remains a mystery to me.  Walsh even put him at safety one game when the other team was out of time and everyone new they would throw and throw deep.
