I understand the issue and the associated sensitivity, but working with several Hawaiians I can attest to the fact that the term "native Hawaiian" is commonly used, with pride. We can agree to disagree, but it would surprise me if Toner would object to being referred to as Hawaiian. I don't see the analogy to Americans born abroad.
