The DOC isn't for everyone... just like Stanford. Often Agree, sometimes not. Such is Life.
Will continue to enjoy his insights and banter (EVEN IF ALL CAPS) on the Booty. Shame, like Garvin, no longer welcome here. Is this Berkeley?
I don't think this is factually correct. Ferrari was the only poster (other than true trolls) I know of who was banned but he seemed unable to resist getting into strong, personal conflicts with multiple people. Garvin didn't agree with the decision and decided to quit after expressing his anger over it. Keeping Ferrari and his posting practices is not something I would draw a line for but Garvin is free to make his own choices. I am friends with Garvin and sat with him at multiple Rose Bowls so I miss him, but life goes on for both of us. Garvin is welcome to come back anytime he wants. Like Garvin, DOC is also welcome here. As he acknowledged, he refuses to apologize for or change his online persona and doesn't want to post under the rules of this site.Â
Although at times the rules seem overly harsh, I remember very clearly how terrible it was when politics and anger started to overwhelm our wonderful Stanford sports community. Instead of eagerly opening the Cardboard every morning to catch up on all the posts about multiple sports, I found myself opening the Cardboard with trepidation because I might not be able to fight back the urge to go to political battle. As things got worse, I was preparing to leave the Cardboard and get all of my information from official and other media sites. I think it is very difficult to maintain the Cardboard's high signal, low noise culture with highly bellicose posters. And I know that it is impossible to maintain if we allow politics to infect the discussions.Â
Bottom line, I am sad to see some posters choose to leave because they don't like the rules, but that is a price I am willing to pay to keep the truly special character of the Cardboard. If I want some bombast, I can always read TOS for a few minutes to remember the reasons I chose the Cardboard.Â
Cheers,
Pete F.

I do not think that Ferrari was the sole genesis of discord in that unfortunate past episode. He was, to his discredit, a catalyst for conflict, and some here contributed and initiated w/ incendiary digs and provocative comments of their own. ferrari stirred something in many Cardboarders that moved them to grab their pitchforks and torches.
It is calmer now that he is not commenting, and in general I prefer that. It is revisionist, though, to deem that calm to be evidence of the innocence of those who remain. I have reflected on my role in those political "discussions". Hopefully, others have as well.
In the case of johnnyo and his ALL CAPS, the vast majority of comments politely registered their distain for that font selection. However, as he persisted, many who felt their pique reflected the majority wanted to ban that style of posting. Ahh! The tyranny of the majority.
For me johnnyo53 evoked comparisons to R.P. McMurphy and others here struck me as channeling the spirit of Nurse Ratched. I do not know johnnyo's history on other boards. His choice of font, though, strikes me as trivial. But the discussion got to to a point of tension because ALL CAPS is so offensive to some posters. One needs to choose one's battles. Such choices reflect our values. I have always valued the maverick nature of Stanford's persona. It was one of the overarching factors in choosing to come here. But rogues need boundaries as well. Balance is a very difficult and constant challenge.
