Yeah the hot tub thing I really didn't care about either way. On the one hand, it's just a wacky thing to do. If someone had done that in my dorm, I'd probably have thought it was fun. On the other hand, there should be a higher bar of standard for student athletes (especially high-profile ones) because they don't want to seem like they are above university rules, and don't want to seem insensitive about the program's image. But I personally didn't think it was significant either way, and I personally don't care whom athletes date so long as they are not twice-deceased fictional Stanford students.
I do think character matters though, I think you can comment on it by people's actions and words (or Tweets even, as some athletes are active on social media these days), and I think refusing to shake hands would be a fairly minor issue, but material, and worth following up on.
