With regards to the NFL, the team a player joins may be crucial to his pro league success.
For example, without Bill Walsh's involvement in their playing careers, I think it's likely that Montana or Young would have never played a Super Bowl game.
I think only about 5 of the NFL's team's are especially well managed and coached, which means there is only a small chance that a star collegiate player like Rosen will end up playing for a first rate NFL team. More common is the story of Andrew Luck's pro career, which has suffered from the inept management and coaching of the Colts.
I continue to be surprised that more college star players have not followed the path of John Elway and Eli Manning, guys who refused to play for the poorly managed operations (Colts and Chargers) that were in line to draft them.
