.... if Chryst can't get the ball moving and Costello can, then as long as the game's outcome is in doubt, I would think Shaw will play the hot hand.

Just reverse Chryst and Costello and I think you have what most people thought made the most sense and were hoping for. 

And yes, you do lose your starting job due to injury if the sub seems to outplay you, and gives you team a spark, and inspires confidence in his teammates.

But will be rooting for whoever starts and not quite ready to crown myself a better coach than Shaw.
