I am not thrilled about the Press Release. It was almost a given that Stanford would get to 17,500 for a BCS bowl game so close to so many of our alums. However, 17,500 is really just the starter allotment. I am sure there are thousands of tickets floating around. Announcing that Stanford has sold out might make some believe that there is no need to go. That's not true, each Stanford fan that attends replaces an OK State fan.
The Press Release has a mission accomplished feel, that is just not the case with bowl game ticket sales. Yes, the conference met the contractual requirement, but the AD should still be pushing to get more Stanford fans into the stands.
It is worth noting that last year Oklahoma sold ~8,000 and Uconn sold ~5,000, so it is noteworthy that Stanford "travels" better than Oklahoma. Something the conference should note and promote next year.
