And of course John and Jim for some of us slightly more "seasoned" fans. 8)
Can we throw in Guy Benjamin, sixth in 1977 Hiesman voting? He was my favorite QB for a long time. He did, after all, get 14 first place votes!
And I feel a bit bad for 1978 national passing champion Steve Dils. He didn't crack the Top 10 in the Hiesman voting, but quarterbacks Chuck Fusina, Rick Leach, Steve Fuller and Jack Thompson all did. Fusina won the Maxwell award, Dils won the Sammy Baugh award. None of them except Leach led the nation in any major QB category (Leach was "TDs responsible for" - okay). Dils led the nation in TDs, Completions, Attempts, total plays, completion percentage and was second in yards. And Stanford finished 8-4, ranked 17th in the country (and fifth in the conference).Â
Fusina won the All America, Thompson was the third pick in the draft, Leach won the second most prominent All American roles. #4 and #5 were Dils and Fuller.
Dils played the most games of the five in the NFL (106), followed by Fuller (90), thompson (41), Fusina (14) and Leach (0). Of course the best two quarterbacks in that class were Montana and Simms. Still -- soft spot for Dils.
