His lifetime record even throwing out the screw of 82 was still below 500.  I mean, he would have gotten into a bowl if the play had been ruled correctly, but barely.  And he might have snuck into a bowl at 6-5 in 1980, but still at best he had a borderline case.

More of Elway’s problems had to do with the fact that he was on teams with crap for defense than with the era.
