My guess is that Chryst transferring is not a done deal so he is keeping his option to return open. After investigation, he may find the path to reaching the field at Stanford (injury to Costello) is less imposing than other schools where he may not be guaranteed a starting spot either.

If Costello is out for spring ball, alternative theory is that Chryst agreed to practice this spring with the team even though he is transferring this summer. He can't transfer until he graduates so he may need to be on campus anyway this spring so why not develop his skills with Stanford and enable Stanford to run a practice with a real offense.
