Entirely possible. (I could only find pitch counts for the last game--out of four, sigh.) Brandon Beck threw 77 pitches and was pulled after the first batter he faced in the 7th inning singled. But seven innings isn't really early, and throwing a two-hitter out of twenty batters faced is a decent day's work (Texas's lone run--unearned--was attributed to Beck, as was Stanford's win).Â
And maybe the coaches wanted to give some guys a look. Palisch (FR) threw 11 pitches in 0.1 innings but pulled after walking a man (an error gave Texas runners at second and third bases) and getting an RBI ground out. Grech (SO) threw 24 pitches in 1.2 innings (3 fly outs, 1 ground out), and Bakst (SO) threw 14 pitches in 1.0 inning for 2 fly outs and a ground out.
There aren't that many four-games series, so who knows what the coaches really intended to do. All I know for certain is that I'm guardedly optimistic for this postseason already ;)
