I didnt mean to imply Lyons went to Michigan just to get his Masters. However it is very common for a Stanford student to not get into the graduate program of their choice.  I have had conversations with two Stanford athletes who had another year of eligibility who didnt get into the grad program of their choice and went elsewhere for their final year. Both had very successful athletic years and got their masters
In the case of some athletes, football and basketball, their masters might be completely paid for by their athletic scholarship. Thats a big deal when lacking a silver spoon.Â
