All the attention for the women's tennis team is great but where's the love for the men's team??? :P
The men are currently ranked #4 with a 18-2 record. The top four teams (Wake Forest, UCLA, Ohio State and Stanford) are really in a class by themselves and any one could claim the title this year. All four have two losses with Stanford's losses coming to Wake Forest and UCLA. Our loss to the Bruins in LA was decisive (0-4) but we also beat them at home in February. Our loss to Wake Forest came in the ITA Indoor Championship semifinals where our #1 Tom Fawcett held a 4-1 lead in a third set tiebreaker of the deciding match but couldn't hold on. NCAA championships will be in Winston-Salem this year so Wake will have a brobdingnagian advantage but I like our chances.
We finish up the regular season this weekend with home matches against Oregon and UW. If you have a chance to check the team out, I highly recommend watching our #2 Axel Geller. Geller is a freshman and only ranked #57 as a result of some uncharacteristic losses (UCLA, ASU) but for my money he's the best player in college tennis. He arrived at Stanford as the #1 ranked junior in the world after having reached the finals of Wimbledon and the US Open in 2017. Goldstein really pulled off a coup in getting him to play for us when most observers figured he was a lock to turn pro.
