Interesting about Phillips comment, but not surprising.
As posted once before, Phillips is a 3-technique DT in a 4-3 front, not a 0-technique NT in a 3-4. He was miscast at Stanford because Stanford had no other options at NT. Instead of just occupying blockers, Phillips penetrated. When he guessed right, he made tackles. But when he guessed wrong, big holes opened up that allowed the OL to easily get to the Linebackers.
Phillips is a PERFECT scheme fit for the Buffalo Bills, who are transitioning to a 4-3 defensive front. Phillips has the potential to really shine now that he is in a defense that will harness his ability to be a one-gap penetrator.
Those doubting the value of DWP: He isn't going to make nearly as many tackles as Phillips, but if he can hold his ground and read which side of the Center to get to on each given play, he'll allow Stanford to have a better rush defense than it has had for a few years. If DWP can lower his pad level and control the Center, Stanford will have a Top 20 rush defense.
