At this point, I'm just grateful most of them can at least pass protect.
There has been an evolution here. Hulk commented upon it recently.
In 2016, particularly early 2016, the pass blocking was terrible. The run blocking was still at least okay.
McCaffrey actually averaged a better yds/att than in his big 2015 season (which few recognized) and the Footballoutsiders main run blocking stat (adj line yds) was about the same as 2015.
However, Stanford was 11th in the Pac 12 in sacks allowed despite rarely passing, thus ending at 125th of 128 teams in FootballOutsiders adjusted sack rate.
The staff clearly recognized the problem, and Shaw vowed the pass blocking would get better. It has.
Last year Stanford had the fewest sacks allowed in the Pac 12, and was up to 17th in the adjusted sack rate. This year that seems at least on track. Five sacks allowed so far despite facing some decent fronts, and generally plenty of time.
The run blocking, however, started to decline. Many here have noted that last years run game was pretty much all or none. Stanford's adj line yds was poor, stuff rate was terrible (see FootballOutsiders). And of course this year we seem to have the same problems with consistency but without the explosive plays. [FootballlOutsiders stats not yet available.]
So, the developing OL run blocking issues are certainly not Carberry's alone, and the developments are not all bad. But somehow the OL has to be able to run and pass block adequately.
While I don't think Shaw's comments at the press conference were directly an indictment of Carberry, and as others have noted it was mostly a message to the OL individuals that no other issues matter - they simply have to do their job.
However, Shaw is very aware of the OL issues, and not happy about it. The fact that he had to mention something along the lines of it not being the fault of the new OL coach is a sign that at least the question of the production of said coach is out there.
Quote: and I didn't expect the Herbig-to-RT move cause such a problem at RG that Shaw moved Herbig back and stuck dinged up AT Hall in at RT.
You are more optimistic than I. I had expected the big shuffle along the OL including the shift of Herbig to RT to be a complete disaster. It wasn't great, but not quite a disaster. The overall timing was weird (Hall played the first three plays (or so) and then disappeared until playing the whole second half), but Shaw's explanation didn't seem nuts.
I am really hoping that having the lineup we expected at the start of the year starting at South Bend, and hopefully continuing, will allow the production to start improving.
