Wow, what a garbage result - and lost in the headlines is that they're forcing the President of the university out next year too. He previously had no plans to step down next year and that is a much shorter time horizon than is normal for someone who's only been President for a few years.
With this move, I've really lost all respect for the regents of that institution, and by extension, Maryland itself. How desperate are they for football money? To the point of looking the other way while the coaches let their players literally die on the field? Yeesh.
Here's a more straight-to-the-point story, from WaPo: Maryland regents side with football Coach DJ Durkin over recommendation of President Wallace Loh, who will retire next year
And a pretty damning summary of how his athletes think of him:

Here's a more straight-to-the-point story, from WaPo: Maryland regents side with football Coach DJ Durkin over recommendation of President Wallace Loh, who will retire next year
And a pretty damning summary of how his athletes think of him:
Quote:“If the culture had been ‘malicious or harmful,’ Mr. Durkin would not have earned the loyalty and respect of many of his student-athletes and coaches,” the report stated. “Many players interviewed by the Commission felt Mr. Durkin’s and Mr. Court’s coaching tactics reflected those of a ‘big time football program.’”
Durkin received decidedly mixed reviews from current players who were surveyed by the commission that investigated the program. That group surveyed 94 Maryland players on Sept. 9 and asked about Durkin’s effectiveness. In a comparison that included results from 28 other schools, players rated him lower than the head coach from all but one other program.
