The numbers game is a bit confusing. I guess as a Stanford fan I am not savvy on manipulating the probation system.

The blog/article breaks it down well. Essentially SC is limited to 15 per year for the next three years, but they also must have less than 75 overall. As they are entering the restriction window, they have work to do to get below the 75 ceiling. However, the best way to go in to the window is to have at least 15 in this class. The youngest ones will be able to play through the full ban, so younger is better.
If SC wants 15 (actually 17 with another system manipulation) then space needs to be created by cutting others. Ironically someone is going to get cut because Barkley elected to come back. Could you even imagine? The excitement and joy at learning that Barkley is coming back. The dreams of a BCS bowl game swirling in that players head. And then someone tells that kid he is now needed cut #7.
Next year, the 15 additions likely will not offset the departures, so SC will naturally fall below 75 going forward.
I would guess SC is telling the kids that the NCAA sanctions are to blame, but the real blame seems to come from wanting 15+ newbies even though there is not that kind of space. I think what makes this sad is that many of those kids probably could have left SC last year with far fewer challenges. Now they are getting forced out after showing the program loyalty through the bowl probation window. Nice. But I am sure the SC network will take care of these kids. ::)
Hey, anything to win I guess.
