Garvin, the math tells you everything you need to see. You can start hating, if you want.
Why on Earth would players leave a program with only 75 scholarship players AND a shot at the BCS title game? It does not make any sense. Even if they are player #75 they will still see a ton of action. SC is definitely going to destroy some teams, so almost everyone that could play will play quite a lot. Why would anyone leave that situation after sitting at SC during the bowl-free probation period? Maybe one can get 2 or 3 players with family situations, or whatever, but seven?? Come on. And what a coincidence it will be that seven is precisely the number needed to allow all 17 new recruits to fit.
But it is well within the rules. The SEC masters the idea. Many schools in the conference accept 30+ verbals each year banking on the idea that at least a few won't qualify for school. I don't hate SC or Kiffin for making the move, but it is obvious the NCAA needs to fix this problem.
A player needs to commit to a school and faces severe penalties for transferring. But a coach can leave any ole time for more money, and a school can cut a player at any moment. The kids put their bodies and brains on the line for a system that clearly is not concerned about their best interests.
I guess, I am saying, with or without Kiffin intent it is the NCAA's problem because this looks like the issue the NCAA wants to ignore.Â
