Thanks for the information on Jamie Carey.  I finally did find a Stanford press announcement on what was thought to be the end of her career:

And I did track down the NCAA rule change:  the three point shot was introduced to women's college basketball in 1987 (one year after the Pac-10 added it for men.)  Jennifer Azzi came in 1986, so there were no three point shots her freshman year.
