Of course, this sort of thing happens with Stanford regularly. I don't have a problem with pulling an offer because the kid couldn't meet academic standards. Stanford has had a number of kids in exactly this position -- they couldn't get their test score high enough to clear admissions, so they found out late in the process that they didn't have a Stanford offer after all.
The issue here is whether GT communicated well. We're only getting one side of the story, but according to the kid's coach, GT had the kid's test score for many months and never told him it wasn't good enough. Then they blindsided him at the last minute. Not a good job by GT, if that's what happened.
