Mike Riley was 3-8 and 5-6 at Oregon St. before he bolted to coach the Chargers in 99-01. Of course, the old-timers remember he was fired the same day (New Years Eve) Willingham rode off to the Golden Dome. His Stanford interview, a few weeks later, wasn't exactly pristine or he would have been the coach instead of Teevens.
I will always think the main reason Shaw was selected was that the pooh-bahs would sleep easier in Dec. and Jan. knowing their coach wouldn't scamper off to greener pastures every time a presser is released about this time. Remember that infamous note, albeit for a hour, that Harbaugh resigned and accepted the head coaching job at that football powerhouse Kansas. Granted, that was more agent-speak but it certainly ruffled a feather or two. It was definitely interesting times.
