I suggested a few months ago on the Cardboard that Shaw could still get a head coaching job in the NFL if he wanted one and was told I was full of BS.
I still find it highly unlikely that an NFL team would actually extend an offer to Shaw. All of this speculation is just BS filler for folks needing to say something. But Shaw isn't an idiot - he knows he's got the cushiest gig in all of the football world . . .well, at least until the lights are turned out.
Not sure that NFL teams are "trending" towards hiring college HCs. The new hires seem to be coming from inside the league. All the NFL blather during Stanford's Big-Bowl era, from guys like Steve Spurrier who predicted Shaw going to the SEC a couple of years ago (yes, he actually said this, on GameDay), has died out completely. The longer he stays at Stanford and the program continues a steady decline, the less likely it is he ever has another big-time gig. But, then, he won't need one. He has tenure.
Life is too short to waste on crap football.
