As someone who was at the 1981 NFC Championship game, and witnessed many a Niners game, that Saints game is probably the second biggest regular season win I can remember since the crazy 4 TD 4th Quarter comeback at Philadelphia. I think the Eagles led 28-10 after having sacked Montana like 8 times in the first half.
What made this game so amazing was its back 'n' forth nature and the Niners answering the Saints throughout the whole game. I had assumed the Niners would make a statement in that game. They did, but I couldn't have been more wrong about how because my thinking was they would shut down the Saints with their terrific defense that hadn't allowed more than 26 points in a game all year. Oops.
What a bummer that Solomon Thomas' sack was snuffed out by Sherman holding on the Saints' final drive. That might have been the game given the clock and timeout situation.
Best missed tackle Fred Warner has ever had for sure. Was so glad he missed it and let Saints score because I felt with 3 TOs the Niners had a better chance to win by lining up a late FG than stopping the Saints from scoring a TD. The Kittle catch and run is the stuff of legend.
