Was a translator not immediately available? Or were their wishes just difficult to comprehend?
At first, I figured that while they likely notified the family ASAP, the family is probably still struggling to process the events and haven't yet granted Stanford permission to share more information. Sort of institutional-speak for "we're working on it and we'll share more when we can." But I, too, found the tone of the statements interesting.
The statements were reminiscent of this story late last year: https://padailypost.com/2019/06/16/stanf...disclosed/. (For comparison, here's the same outlet's story on the most recent tragedy: https://padailypost.com/2020/01/17/stanf...disclosed/)
Given that it was at a fraternity, I'm sure many of your minds jumped to the same conclusion mine did--that alcohol may have been involved. Thus, the absence of any mention of alcohol from the stories I've read struck me, but this could just be standard University protocol when releasing information when there is a student death.
Whatever happened, it's devastatingly sad for the entire community, and I hope everyone who needs help takes advantage of the extra help the University is providing to help students navigate the situation.
