While I agree the bay area in general and sf in particular have problems, especially related to property crimes, housing shortages, income inequality, and homelessness, I think a lot of the complaining is silly. I travel across the US to diverse locations and there are problems everywhere. There are homeless problems, housing shortages and traffic problems in hawaii. Where my in-laws live in mississippi often there are water safety/potability issuss after storms, the water, beaches and shellfish are still suspect to me since the BP spills, and an alligator has been spotted recently at the nearby pond. One of my in-laws was so concerned about the medical services in the region that she flew to nyc to have her cancer treated. Plus that area where we drove has the scariest, nastiest, and most dangerously reckless drivers I have encountered anywhere. You could say that’s unfair because most drivers in mississippi are careful and friendly, but a relatively small number of people can ruin many people’s experiences. it’s more likely you’d feel endangered by aggressive drivers in mississippi or new orleans (sorry nola folks) than step in human feces in sf (which i personally have never seen).
And I don’t mean to bag on the southeast. Nola had many friendly people and we ate some amazing southern food. We were lucky enough to be in nola during a music festival and the event, music, and people were wonderful. The kids love the nola bug museum. It has its bright spots and its problems.
But I see no point in complaining about sf — i doubt many people who complain go there regularly. I just spent the weekend there last week and had a great time. The fresh ham and cheese croissant from Arsicault Cafe was one of the most amazing new things I’ve tried in the last year or so.
Yeah, I threw SF into my comment because I figured there is a lot more to do there than some bedroom community.
My point was I think Costello is going to be concentrating on football and won't be too concerned that Starkville isn't (pick whatever town you think is nirvana).
