There is no source or anything to back up this sort of throwaway line. I'm not going to put much stock into it.
I wonder if they are anticipating some deferrals in their freshman class and are making up for it with transfers? In recent years Stanford has seemed to have little desire to take transfer students, usually taking only somewhere between 20 and 30. Given that the transfer acceptance rate in recent years has hovered around 1.5-2%, hats off to him!
I mean, on reddit people are actively advising incoming freshman to take a gap year, and depending on whether circumstances allow it I'd advise the same. Can you imagine doing freshman year remote? It would be horrible.
