The whole story has a lot of gaps, but I am pretty sure it is easy to piece together.
The Dad loves SC, so when SC came a callin' he instantly concluded SC was in the picture for his son.
Son quickly went to learn more and decided to not verbal to other programs just yet.
SC has several NCAA restrictions they are working around, so I am sure they want/need their recruits to be willing to do odd things.
Telling the recruit all of this now makes sense for SC and the recruit. If the recruit is not willling to play or does not love SC, then SC can move on. If the recruit is on SC's short list then that really can't hurt the recruit's prospects elsewhere.
Good for Hawkins to see what SC was willing to do. Good for SC to learn that Hawkins was unwilling to fit within SCs work around of the NCAA restrictions. Good for Stanford that Hawkins and SC might not be the dream match.
This type of thing used to happen all of the time behind the scenes, but now it is tracked by all of the many sites. Nothing really to see here, IMO.
