D2. Vandy can’t compete in the Southeast, Rice can’t compete with anyone and the mission of Stanford U is at cross purposes with big time football. FCS has a bunch of really good teams so D2 could be dominated by Stanford which will still have some very good players who are truly student athletes. Stanford is experiencing the downside of the early sighing date, won’t accept transfers and JC kids and will never accept early entry, all necessary to compete in today’s college football world. Stanford could still schedule a yearly road beating from an SEC team and get a huuuge payday that would go a long way to fund other sports. Might be hard to find D2 opponents out West but travel with 55 instead of 85. Works for me.
That is a romantic notion but the lost revenue from D-1 football television and ticket sales are not replicable elsewhere. All other Stanford sports beyond basketball are subsidized by football revenue. That would be tough to overcome. Another question is whether the Pac12 would let Stanford join in all other sports if they weren't a football member.
