In Trent's defense, I think he recruited some of Stanford's good point guards in the late 90s.  He also had good points at Nevada, one of whom is on the Lakers now (Sessions).    But people used to joke that Mitch was his son, that was how attached to him he was.  Not unlike Monty and Giovacchini though.  It is hard to always know what is going on behind the scenes to make coaches favor players seemingly irrationally.
