The ACC has named the Northwestern AD Jim Phillips as its new commissioner. Bernard Muir was a serious candidate. There are influential alumni who were hoping that Muir would get the job, forcing the Stanford administration to make a change at the top of the Athletic Department.

If you don't want the guy you have, why wait for him to leave you?  Why not tell him to get lost?

Because the Venn diagram of "you" and "the people who make the decision" are not overlapping.
