The Athletic Dept. "pretty much ran itself"-- notably the football program into the ground before Bowlsby arrived. All sorts of changes occurred on his watch, some in the public spotlight, many behind the scenes. The difference was that Bowlsby had done that kind of turnaround at Univ. of Iowa before. The Stanford mess wasn't his first rodeo. Do I think there's no chance that Condi could do it? No. There's a chance, but not a lot of of extremely large proportions upside to lay against the risk that the Athletic Dept. is different from the State Dept. and White House. The public persona and celebrity appeal are the least important factors in making the decision.
