A poster on the Bootleg expressed one view: that the numero uno thing one should look for in an Athletic Director is...ability to bring in donations and raise money.  That might be. I don't know. Does money follow athletic success or does money cause athletic success?  Stanford convinced John Arrillaga to fund a whole new stadium during a period of football decline, but maybe JA is just an outlier data point, a guy so besotted by Stanford athletics that he is a compulsive supporter. But, giving to athletics has increased (as has earned revenue) ever since Harbaugh set foot on campus.  And JA's funding a stadium aside, it can be argued that the new Pac-12 and its TV contract is more significant than shifts in alumni giving over the last few years.  And I certainly don't know who/what type of of athletic dept. leader is a slam-dunk to be a success.
