Texas is a very strange place.  The vast majority of people there actually think that UT is the academic equal of Harvard or Stanford.  And going to college out of state is viewed the way people in other states would view going to college in a foreign country.  Sure, there are kids who want to go out of state, but they're rare and unusual.
