i think often of jaco pastorius, the fabulous jazz bassist, who had a long history of drinking and fighting but was diagnosed as bipolar only two years before his death. he again got drunk and belligerent in a bar and fought with the bouncer, who pushed him out of the bar. he fell, hit his head on the curb, and died at age 35. unfortunately, jaco was diagnosed late and also did not have close friends and family nearby to help him stay in treatment.
As soon as I heard of Sherman's arrest my first thought was bi-polar. It seemed to be the most logical explanation of the described behavior because it was so out of character. If this is in fact true, and Sherman agrees to get the help he needs, he probably has very favorable odds of avoiding jail. Given his notoriety and background, he will likely have a good opportunity to make a lot of lemonade out of the lemons his incident gave him as well.
