My daughter wrote a paper on Holmes for an English class on "Femmes Fatale", arguing she was a prototypical femme fatale. The book and documentary indicated she manipulated and conned many men including her Stanford prof, her board of directors, employees, journalists, and others. Professor Gardner, a woman, was not taken in. I'd be surprised if she was actually under Balwani's control: if this ends up with Balwani taking the rap and Holmes getting off, that would certainly clinch who was controlling whom! My daughter's teacher was convinced, she told her she might include Holmes in next year's Femmes Fatale class.
One day a few years ago when daughter was visiting, I drove wife and her to California Avenue for lunch. On the way we were talking about Holmes and the case. I pulled over to let them off at the restaurant when a parking spot opened up across the street. I was waiting for traffic to pass so I could zip across into the spot, when a sleek black car zoomed up and pulled into the spot. The driver got out and it was Balwani. We had a good laugh over it.
