It's also possible that the pandemic disproportionately affected Stanford recruiting as students wanted to go to a school closer to home (especially if remote was a possibility), hurting a school known for its national recruiting more than other schools. Add to it the inability to host students on campus and maybe we were at a bigger disadvantage than our competitors.
Of course, it is reasonable to think that a different staff might have compensated better; I think this staff can be rightfully criticized for being slow to adapt to the changing recruiting landscape. Fortunately, they seem to have found their footing this year.
