Having Whiteside back is big, but he and Chris McCain are both no more than 230.  When you play a 3-4 defense like the Bares do, you need the OLBs to be big enough to hold the edge on outside runs.  Whiteside might be stout enough, but McCain is 6-6 with a high center of gravity, so having Whiteside back is significant.  Having Fortt will give them four high quality guys at ILB. 

Honestly, Whiteside and Fortt could make California's front seven on par with Stanford's.
