That is going to be difficult I expect. The new guy isn't going to want the "interim" looking over his shoulder, and the "interim" isn't going to take kindly to being rejected as permanent.

Hard to say what will happen with Williams, but USC has historically had many outstanding recruiters and dominant classes prior to his arrival, it's not a difficult assignment as long as coaches are energetic and committed to it. The problem was that Helton's staff was full of indifferent recruiters, most notably Clancy Pendergast and Neil Callaway, and Helton himself wasn't particularly invested. You can bet that someone like James Franklin and his crew would be very successful on the recruiting front with or without Williams.
