I heard somewhere that this would be the first time in decades that kal out-earned Stanford in total and gold medal count.
It is not as if I am able to jump in the pool to help out the Olympic effort, so I don't want to imply that Stanford athletes are not doing well. The reality is that to get alums to win medals a school is going to need amazing swimmers and/or a legacy of developing track sprinters. In those two areas a 20 something year-old can win multiple individual medals and since the USA is good multiple relay medals will also be possible.
Several universities have more young alums with the capability of dominating Olympic swimming finals and Stanford has never really been home to track sprinters.
Things can change in 4-8 years, but without Olympic champion swimmers in the pool other Pac-12 teams probably will continue to excel.
