It's not so much the pun as the execution. Though I'll admit I'm a difficult guy to please on the pun front. In the volleyball case, the sentence makes sense both on the literal level (if May-Treanor wasn't named Misty, she could still be msity) and the punny level. On the other hand, the Montgomery sentence makes no sense aside from a vehicle to convey a pun, which is what makes it awful.
