Nothing like a substantial win to make a week in the Bahamas feel like a grand holiday! The wind and the mostly-cloudy skies this week had amplified the disappointment of the Southern Florida loss. But today’s win has provided the winning medicine to heal all wounds, helping yesterday’s loss fade into the Atlantic sunset (full disclosure, no sun, no sunset).
A few take-aways from today’s game…
MD’s plays with attitude, and their most egregious play occurs after the whistle. The two technical fouls on MD were not continuation-of-the play or over-aggressive physical play. They were mean-spirited, over-the-top frustration technicals — a hack to the head and a forearm to the back of a downed player. Brenda Frese did nothing to discourage this behavior.
Still, the positives for Stanford outweighed negatives for MD.
Most of the positives can be read via the box score or the through other contributions to the thread, but the value of racking up such a positive score early gave Tara the opportunity to give the second string a chance to play. Jana got substantial minutes, and in spite of her miscues, she did get valuable court time. She will come along, she just needs playing time. Jordan, too.
Time to celebrate beating a #4 and a #2 ranked teams. MD may have been missing some key players (and almost fouled themselves into five on four in this game), but Stanford needed a smoothly played offensive game to get back in their stride, which they did!
Go team! December contains some real challenges and this week may have provided the confidence and fluidity to help make the coming season a successful.
