Assistant coaches typically have shorter contracts than coordinators and head coaches. They last 1-2 years. There is — or at least used to be — a coaches' convention after the bowls were over. Assistant coaches would joke that you could tell who was looking for a job because those guys were wearing sports coats while everyone else was casual. I wouldn't expect to learn much before then.
