USC plays a defensive style that makes sense for a team with the size that they have across the board. They play solid position defense, so they are able to drop and defend the lane, as well as get a hand in the face of three-point shooters, and be in good position to rebound vs. teams that are smaller. Stanford's patient offensive approach allows them to wait for a breakdown for an open shot, and lets them avoid turnovers, allowing them additional shot attempts, and they are not at the rebounding disadvantage that some teams face.
Stanford struggles, and turns the ball over when the opponent pressures Keefe and Kisunas when they have the ball at the high post, and overplays to deny Keefe and Kisunas the ability to make easy passes--neither of them is a gifted passer, and neither has much ability to put the ball on the floor; risk/reward is great for the opponent. USC is a good matchup for Stanford because they play off of the high post, and they do not play denial defense to the wings. When Stanford plays against teams who play good pressure defense, the turnovers move up to around 20, resulting in 11 fewer shots than last night, and many more fast break opportunities for the opponent, which is why some of those games against opponents who are not any more talented than USC get out of hand. This might improve as Reynaud improved, he has a wider range of skills, but if Stanford continues to put the ball at the high post as often as they do, the pressure will continue to give them trouble.
