I mailed him a note thanking him for all that he’s done for Stanford. A week later, I got a phone call and was greeted with, “This is John Arrillaga calling to thank you for a very classy letter!”
We chatted briefly and he told me, “always remember your alma mater,” and I told him that I do, just not quite in the same capacity as him. And he said, “well someday you will because you are going to be very rich!” Still waiting for that prediction to become true, but it was an honor to receive a call from The Godfather himself. May he Rest In Peace. So much of our Stanford experience would be different without him.
