Tanforan Race Track had a storied history. It basically replaced the track in San Francisco’s Ingleside District (homes were built on the oval that still exist as Urbano Way just below the old El Rey Theatre).
Tanforan served as a relocation center in 1942 for Issei, Nisei and Sensei before transferring them to Topaz, Utah in the shameful “Internment” program during WW2.
After the war racing returned and the immortal Citation was upset by the tiny Noor. Noor and Citation have streets in the area named after them and there is a statue of Seabiscuit in the Mall.
Tanforan burned down in 1964 (arson?). I bet Coach was a railbird.
The mall is scheduled to be leveled for condos and tech buildings.
