He's become an unbelievably prolific American history writer, the quality of which books ranges from the very good to the excellent. I just finished 'American Colossus', an overview of the years 1865-1895. Balanced and centrist. I much prefer it to the Oxford history, entrusted to a Stanford professor, Richard White, and not very impressive.
I am curious what sort of impression he made way back when.
Never read him, but thanks for bringing him to light. There simply isn't enough time to read all the history books I would like to read and I have ben at it a long, long time.
